Our list of practice areas is constantly evolving because, frankly, the Internet never sits still. Companies small and large bloom from nowhere and then die off like so many roses after Valentine’s Day. AOL was the dominant online company twenty years ago. Most people aren’t even aware AOL is still operating today.
Privacy law in the online arena was a bit of a joke five years ago. Today, we live in a world where data is king and countries and states are enacting laws to give people back control over their data. As a business collecting data online, even if just through analytics programs, you must be aware of the privacy requirements and comply with each new law or regulation on the topic. Laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act and regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation [“GDPR”] contain significant penalty provisions in amounts that may well bankrupt most businesses. For example, Google was fined $57 million by the French for GDPR violations in 2019; a fine that should get your attention.
If you are considering winging it online – don’t. Whether you work with me or another attorney, make sure you speak to someone who is knowledgeable about the latest Internet law requirements? Contact us for a free consultation regarding any of our legal services and practice areas.
